NEW YORK — The Food and Drug Administration, the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the European Commission recently approved a new prescription drug for people taking heartburn and other acid reflux. That’s the first drug to treat heartburn since 1998 and a heartburn that’s caused by stomach acid. The new drug, Nexium, is also indicated to reduce symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). But the Food and Drug Administration doesn’t approve the drug, which is used to treat acid reflux disease and GERD.
So what’s the problem? That’s why the FDA has approved this drug to treat a group of people who have suffered from severe stomach acid reflux and heartburn for years. This drug works by lowering stomach acid.
“The first drug to treat acid reflux and heartburn is Nexium,” Dr. Lisa E. McInnes, M. D., chief of the gastroenterology and cardiology division at the University of Maryland School of Medicine said in a conference call Tuesday.
“We’ve seen that we can actually take this drug for people with heartburn, and that’s why it works, because that’s what people who’ve had GERD are really going to benefit from,” she said.
There are many more drugs for GERD and other stomach problems, but a drug for acid reflux that can treat heartburn has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
“We’re going to get to the root of that problem because it’s a really big, big question,” said Dr. Peter H. Schott, M. D., director of the Division of Gastroenterology, Urology and Nutrition at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.
“The problem is we have to address a larger problem, a smaller problem,” said Dr. Schott, adding that people with heartburn and acid reflux can use Nexium to treat both disorders. If this drug was approved to treat acid reflux, it could be a very expensive drug.
The Food and Drug Administration approved the drug in December of 1999, the same year the U. Food and Drug Administration approved Nexium. That’s the first drug for acid reflux since 1998. But that’s only the beginning, according to the FDA. It’s also the first drug to treat GERD, which is also caused by stomach acid. It’s the first heartburn drug that treats acid reflux disease.
“That was our first time in the world with a drug that can treat heartburn and GERD, and we know that there are so many other drugs for GERD,” Dr. McInnes said.
“This is one of the reasons we are making this decision,” Dr. Schott said. “The reason we are going to take this drug is because this is one of the first medicines to treat acid reflux and heartburn.”
“This drug is effective because it has been proven to reduce symptoms of GERD,” she said, adding that the drug can also reduce symptoms of acid reflux and heartburn.
The FDA said that the drug should be sold as a generic drug and should be used under the supervision of a licensed health care professional. But the company also said that it hasn’t approved the drug, as it has been shown to cause serious side effects.
The agency said that the FDA has been working with a group of health care professionals and others to develop a plan for the company.
“This is an important part of our strategy,” said Dr. McInnes, who is vice president for global health affairs.
The most common side effects of Nexium (esomeprazole) include upset stomach, headache, and diarrhea. Less common side effects of Nexium include a stuffy nose, dizziness, and confusion. Patients should contact their doctor immediately if they experience any of the following side effects or reactions: heartburn, constipation, nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, diarrhea, constipation with gas, increased thirst, increased urination, headache, feeling tired, or feeling confused.
